What actually makes mobile controls good

What actually makes mobile controls good

We play a lot of games where the idea is great and the controls quietly ruin it. Over time the team has developed strong opinions about what works on a touchscreen, and I wanted to write some of them down.

The first rule is keep your thumbs in mind. Anything you need to press in a hurry should live near the bottom corners where a thumb naturally rests. Games that scatter urgent buttons across the top of the screen are fighting how people actually hold a phone.

The second is give feedback. A good tap feels like it did something — a small animation, a sound, a bit of haptic buzz. Without that, players start double-tapping and second-guessing, and the whole thing feels laggy even when it isn't.

The third is offer options. Tilt steering is great for some people and nauseating for others. The best mobile games we've reviewed let you pick your input, and it costs the developer almost nothing to add.

None of this is glamorous, but it's the difference between a game you recommend and one you uninstall on the bus home.
