Strategy games that teach you to lose well

July 2, 2026 · Marek Dvořák

There's a specific joy in losing a strategy game badly, staring at the screen, and suddenly understanding exactly what you did wrong. The good ones are built to create that moment.

Tidegate Command is a recent favorite for this. My first two towns collapsed and I was annoyed, but by the third I could feel myself planning differently. The game never explained my mistake — it just let me feel it, which stuck far better than any tutorial pop-up.

A well-designed strategy game gives you enough information to see the loss coming and enough agency to have prevented it. That's the sweet spot. When a defeat feels random, you learn nothing. When it feels earned, you can't wait to try again.

If you're new to the genre, my advice is to embrace those early losses instead of restarting the second things go wrong. Let a game fall apart once. You'll play smarter for it.
